In June 2017, American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) became the very first WELL-certified tenant space in the Washington metro region and the first space in the world to achieve both Platinum level certification in WELL and LEED. WELL, administered by the International WELL Building Institute, is known as taking the LEED certification a step further, urging green builders and designers to create spaces that not only benefit the planet, but human health as well. At the new ASID space at Columbia Center, a healthy amount of natural light, access to drinking water, a fitness component and the availability of nutritious food options.
A sophisticated circadian lighting system featuring automated window shades adjusts the amount of light in the space based on the position of the sun, creating a more comfortable, adaptable and energy-efficient work environment. Rigorous water quality measures are executed and closely monitored, and fresh fruit and vegetables are provided to employees on a daily basis. Employees do not have assigned desks and are free to choose from a variety of workspaces that offer different levels of privacy and sit/stand options. This design not only provides employees a greater sense of autonomy and choice but also encourages greater movement.
