rand* was contracted to complete an expansion of an existing tenant space for Lord Aeck Sargent. The new space was set to incorporate a vacant floor below their existing offices and connected by a new sculptural stair that acts as an art piece within the space. The design is highlighted by a state-of-the-art lighting design lab, collaboration rooms, conference rooms and huddle spaces, and open offices throughout. The complex design within the small footprint creates a jewel box space that operates as a unique work environment.

This work environment reflects Lord Aeck Sargent’s design principles and visions of the spaces they design through the custom millwork package, wall graphics, custom lighting, wall covering, and ceiling baffles that permeate throughout the space. Establishing a clear line of communication and developing a great relationship allowed for an open and collaborative project approach which was paramount for the success of the project due to the extensive use of custom materials, long-lead items, and design-build elements.

The most critical of these design-build pieces was the monumental stair connecting the new and existing space. Elements of the stair were re-worked in the field to ensure the design language held true. The most challenging aspect was the stair cut and installation on the occupied floor with minimal disruption.
