ASID HQ becomes first double platinum space in the world
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 13, 2017) – The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) headquarters offices has become the first space in the world to achieve both Platinum level certification for the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL™) under WELL v1 and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), under the LEED ID+C rating system – the highest recognition awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™). The office space, built by rand* construction corporation and designed by Perkins+Will, incorporates the most innovative health and wellness design features, and has sustainability as a central philosophy.
“This is an exciting day for sustainability in the built environment,” said Beth Giltner, rand* Sustainability Coordinator. “From the beginning of this project, we were driven to build a space that raised the bar for employee and environmental health. We are honored to be a part of this monumental achievement and are energized to continue promoting the advantages of sustainability in design and construction.”
The innovative 8,500 square-foot office, located in the Columbia Center in downtown Washington, D.C., was WELL Certified at the Platinum level under WELL v1 on June 9, 2017 and LEED Certified Platinum on January 18, 2017. Administered by IWBI, the WELL Building Standard is an evidence and performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features that impact human health and wellness in the built environment, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind.
The ASID office features biophilic design, bringing natural elements into the space to reduce stress, improve air quality and promote employee wellness and productivity. A sophisticated circadian lighting system featuring automated window shades adjusts the amount of light in the space based on the position of the sun, creating a more comfortable, adaptable and energy-efficient work environment. Rigorous water quality measures are executed and closely monitored, and fresh fruit and vegetables are provided to employees on a daily basis. Employees do not have assigned desks and are free to choose from a variety of workspaces that offer different levels of privacy and sit/stand options. This design not only provides employees a greater sense of autonomy and choice but also encourages greater movement.
